China Development Brief

I’m racing around Beijing and have lots to report, but in preparation for this afternoon’s meeting with Nick Young at China Development Brief I’m just going to recommend their website. I’ve only begun to delve into it, but it’s one of the few sites that I’ve come across that really speaks to the complex range of issues that seem to me most important in China today, linking economic and social issues, and presenting them understandably. There is a lot of free content and also premium information at a modest subscription price.

July 12, 2007

Yesterday morning news of our current difficulties was injudiciously leaked to international media by a former associate. We had hoped to keep the wraps on this for some time while we tried to mobilise support with the Communist Party and Government of China; but now, alas the news is out, and we are not sure what the result will be.

For those not aware of the basics:-

On July 4 our Beijing office was visited by a joint delegation of a dozen officials from the Beijing Municipality Public Security Bureau, the Beijing Municipality Statistical Bureau, and the Beijing Municipality Cultural Marketing General Legal Implementation Team.

After investigations and interviews lasting around three hours, they ordered the Chinese edition of China Development Brief to cease publication forthwith. The authorities are now deciding what punishment to apply. It appears that initially they were considering a relatively modest fine.

The closing down of the Chinese edition of China Development Brief (http://www.chinadevelopmentbrief.com/) has generated lots of discussion across the global China-focused community ((I’m not sure what to call the network of networks of people interested in China, but its existence and fecundity is more evident every day.)), and I was planning to write something about it here any. Thanks, Michael, for providing this information from Beijing. Anyone involved in publishing will pay special attention to a situation like this, but I met Nick Young, editor of China Development Brief, through an environmentalist colleague in DC who thought he would be a good person to ask about my plans to write a new Chinese green living book–more because he is a westerner very much imbedded in China than anything else. I was most taken with his offices, which surrounded a tiny courtyard in a Beijing hutong.
