U.S. journalism about China: “a culture that worships money and Western fads”?

When we were planning the launch of GUANXI: THE CHINA LETTER, Tim Ambler at the London Business School, now a GUANXI adviser board member, suggested that we run a feature that would choose the most misleading or inaccurate Western article on China each month and explain what was wrong with the reporting. Today’s post is certainly not the expert analysis Tim was suggesting (and which we plan to undertake), but I must point out the misleading generalizations that appear on the front page of the Washington Post today, in an article entitled, “Punks and Posers in China. The reporter blandly refers to China as “a country that suppresses dissent and individuality,” and the punk rocker as “an artist in a culture that worships money and Western fads.” I’m in Washington, and one thing I learn as I talk to people here is that it’s essential to provide Americans with a more nuanced view of China. Comments like that are not helpful, or informative.
